Civilians in the Civil War

Three of my ancestors from Virginia (the brothers John Washingron Durvin, James F. Durvin, and Benjamin Franklin Durvin) served in the Confederate Army. I would like to find out what other of my ancestors did during the Civil War: another brother William A. J. Durvin and John Franklin Shepherd of Fluvanna Co., VA (born in 1828). I can find a John Franklin Shepherd who was in the Goochland Light Artillery - I don't know if this is the same person (Goochland Co. is next to Fluvanna). John Franklin Shepherd (he sometimes went by the name 'Franklin' or 'Frank') had a store in Columbia, Fluvanna Co. Perhaps he provided supplies to the Confederate Army? I would appreciate any information on what these two men may have done during the War. Any ideas on where to look would be appreciated.
