Hi George, thanks for the information. Looks like there is no evidence that William A. J. Durvin or John Franklin Shepherd supported the War. Some of the Durvin family worked for the railroad and may have been exempt from military service. I don't see an occupation for William A. J. Durvin in the 1860 census, but in the 1900 census (for Richmond, VA) there is a William Durvin in the Little Sisters of the Poor institution. I spoke with a sister at the institution and she said there was a notation in the records in French indicating that this William Durvin worked for the railroad. Also, a couple days later in the 1900 census (Louisa County, VA) William A. Durvin is living with his daughter and son-in law. I think he was counted twice in the 1900 census.
