I thank everyone for the input. The John Shepherd in the Goochland Artillery couldn’t be ‘my’ John Franklin Shepherd, as he was in in 30’s in 1864 (born 1828). The one in the 36th regiment can’t be him, as he died in 1896. The third John F. Shepherd enlisted in western VA, so unlikely he was my ancestor. I guess I will have to pursue his civilian pursuits during the War. In the 1860 census for Albemarle Co. he is a ‘salesman’ and in the 1870 census for Fluvanna Co. he is a ‘retail merchant’. I believe he owned a store in Columbia, Fluvanna Co., VA.
