Re: What's the diff.'tween Light and Heavy Inf.? N

Don't know, but there was a "Light Division" formed in the ANV in 1862 during the time that Richmond was threatened in the Peninsula Campaign. The first commander was A. P. Hill, and the first contingent of troops were those brigades commanded by Charles W. Field (later commanded the Alabama Brigade - formerly Law's), Maxcy Gregg, Joseph S. Anderson, James J. Archer, Lawrence Branch, and William Pender.

Some writers have speculated that the division was named for its ability to move around rapidly, but many of the soldiers believed that it was named because they traveled 'light,' without extras, coats, shoes, food, or other such items. It later fought in the II and III Corps of the ANV, and finally in the I Corps at Appomattox.
