This was probably not a meaningful distinction during the Civil War. In Napoleonic times there were organizations known as "heavy" infantry such as the Imperial Guard which could be distinguished from "jaegers", that were considered light infantry. That's about as much as I know. I'm not at all qualified to discuss this topic further, but I'm sure that others are.
