Re: Reddick DISHOUGH, 21st. Ala. Co. F

The microfilm entry for R. Dishough, Co. "F" 21st Alabama includes only two entries from a death register. The citation is Conf. Arch. Chap. 10, file 2 pp. 63-64. One includes the name and nothing else; the other says he had $3.50 on his person at the time of death. No dates, no place, nothing else.

I'm not familiar with the citation source; perhaps someone else would care to comment. If I had to guess, I'd say it might be from the unpublished documents that are part of NARA Record Group 109.

The index card references the 21st Louisiana with the notation '???' after that. I looked through the published service records of Louisiana Confederate soldiers and saw nothing under Deshough or Dishough or anything close to those spellings. The library at Wallace State is the nearest repository for Louisiana records in my area, and it's seventy miles or more from my home.

Your comment about this man being a casualty during the siege of Fort Gaines sounds reasonable. However, I believe there were no casualties among the garrison prior to Anderson's surrender of Fort Gaines, which was one of the reasons Confederate leaders were angry about his decision. Seven companies from the 21st Alabama were surrendered there. Companies "B" and "K" escaped when Fort Powell was evacuated, while Company "A" surrendered with the garrison of Fort Morgan. Those captured at Fort Gaines received paroles at Ship Island, Mississippi, January 4, 1865, and returned to Mobile shortly afterwards.
