BIG QUESTION: How do we identify folks with common names?

I have where he lived in 1860. Know he served from the information given and that he perished for whatever reason.
I figured he probably/possibly served with fellow Clarke Countians, but this is all I am able to say.

So, how do I figure out which of the J. Cunninghams and James Cunninghams is the one I want and need? Or do I?
