I realize that the 1866 Census, which lists soldiers killed, died of disease, and disabled, has a lot of problems as a source of total caualty figures, it could still give a more realistic number (than 714). The limitations of this, among others, is that, I understand, some counties are incomplete. Also some counties apparently used a form which did not include the soldier casualties, at least from what I have read on this board. Then there are the families who moved away before the census, as well as others from out of state who moved in. But at least some more reasonable figure for state casualties might be generated. There should be tabulations for each county, and a total of the entire state might be made from those.
