These are great suggestions. There really have to be limits and definitions to guide a project like this. I'd suggest that it has to be pursued unit by unit, and that the units should be at least the size of a company. For example, I would rather credit an Alabama soldier who joined a company from Texas to that state and stick with units mainly composed of Alabamians.

I'd also suggest that the cause of death be included wherever possible. Sometimes you don't know, but usually that information is available. For instance, records of the 11th Alabama Infantry include a note about a soldier who committed suicide. There were a very small number of soldiers who were executed. Deaths should be included through the date that each unit surrendered, except in the case of imprisonment. If a soldier galvanized, went West and was killed by Indians, his name should appear on another kind of list.

As far as listings deaths and other casualties, compiled service records are a good place to start. Muster roll information can be used to fill in the gaps. Where these are missing or incomplete, personal diaries, letters and newspaper reports can help. I'd also include widow's pension applications.
