Various counties contributed men to the 33rd Alabama, they are: Butler...County seat: Greenville...which constituted Co H, Coffee, Covington, Dale and Montgomery.

With the exception of those men from Montgomery County (and maybe not them either) none of these men went to Montgomery to enlist. Enlistments would have taken place at a town, usually the county seat, within their county. In the case of Company H, this was in Greenville not Montgomery. Three of the counties,(Dale, Covington and Coffee) are in southeast Alabama, and it would have been very impracticable for these men to travel to Montgomery.

The first time these companies were gathered at one place was at Fort Barancas, FL the present-day sight of Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Based on some of the questions the young author asks, I believe you're on the wrong story track. You asked about a "16 year old son of a plantation owner"...believe me, if you're writing about Co H, 33rd Alabama you've got the wrong company! With the POSSIBLE exception of the company officers, who were probably merchants or lawyers, etc., almost all of Co H were sons of YEOMAN FARMERS, that is, small family farmers who didn't have enough money to own a horse (mules yes..horses no) much less any slaves. Additionally, since most of these counties were outside the "plantation belt" it is unlikely that many of Co H ever even SAW a plantation much less knew any one on one. I can speak on this with some authority, as an ancestor, Nathanial Macon McKellar, was in company H and I am quite familiar with his background and the family background of many of his compatriots. Sorry...no plantations.
