Re: Dead of Co. "G", 11th Ala. Inf. Regt.

I used two sources: the NARA CSR's and the consolidated muster roll dated Dec. 31, 1864. According to the roll, Randolph C. Thomson, age 31, married, a merchant from Northport Ala., enrolled at Decatur GA on April 1, 1864. Neither document provides any indication that he actually served with the unit. There's quite a lot of information in his CSR which shows him serving as a clerk with the Quartermaster Department; last station, Decatur GA.

Evidently two local companies had been recruited, McMath's "Tuscaloosa Rifles" and Steele's "Northport Rifles". Neither having enough members to be accepted in service, they merged, McMath being elected captain and Steele 1st lieutenant. We may assume the name "Tuscaloosa Rifles" was retained as it was more inclusive, also being the name of the county. Captain McMath was killed and Lt. Steele mortally wounded at Frazier's Farm VA, June 30, 1862.
