Re: Confederate officers from Alabama who died in

Andrew Brown Archibald, born July 8, 1828 in Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama, the son of James Hall Archibald and Mary A. Steele of that place. In 1848 he was a founding member of the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church, and on August 26, 1851 he married Miss Sarah Summerville. In the 1856 Directory of Greene County by V. Gayle Snedicor, A.B. Archibald is listed as a planter of Pleasant Ridge, and the accompanying map shows his land holdings in that precinct. His dwelling house was approximately 1/16 mile south of the Pickens County line, within Greene County. I have no record of any children.

Evidently after Sarah died June 10, 1856, Andrew ran into some bad fortunes. In 1860 he was a resident of the tavern of D.A. Graham in Pleasant Ridge (on the northwest corner of the crossroads), and perhaps employed there as a clerk, his vocation listed in the census. The property he owned in 1856 is shown on a c1860 map of Pleasant Ridge to be in the ownership of others of the Archibald clan. This tavern (or hotel) was just over a mile from Andrew's former residence plantation and less than a mile south of the Pickens County line.

Andrew Brown Archibald enlisted in McCaa's Rangers on November 14, 1861, and was commissioned 1st Lt on August 8, 1862. After Capt McCaa was mortally wounded at Murphreesboro, January 1, 1863, Andrew was promoted to Captain and commanded the company, now Co D, 8th Confederate Cavalry. On June 24, 1863 he was captured at Shelbyville, Tennessee. He was held in Nashville, then transferred to Louisville Military Prison on July 3, 1863. He was moved to Johnson's Island Prison, Ohio, on July 7, 1863. On February 6, 1864, he died of chronic diarhhea and was buried on the island.
