Re: Lt. Gen'l Richard Taylor
In Response To: Lt. Gen'l Richard Taylor ()

You might look for T. Michael Parrish's "Richard Taylor: Soldier Prince of Dixie", University of North Carolina Press, 1992. After meeting Taylor at Meridian in early September of 1864, Forrest was heard to say, "He's the biggest one in the lot. If we'd had more like him, we would have whipped the Yankees long ago." We tend to think of the last campaign in Alabama as being directed by Forrest, but Taylor was in command and gave directions to both Forrest and Maury. He hoped to defeat Wilson north of Selma and then use Forrest's command to help raise the siege of Mobile, but of course things just didn't work out that way.
