Re: Unionists in Fl/AL
In Response To: Re: Unionists in Fl/AL ()

My 2gtgrandfather, David Pierpont MORGAN, was inducted into the 2nd Fl. Cavalry, US, at Cedar Key, Fl., in April of 1864. He died there in October, 1864. He was a member of White's Band of Unionists. A Major Campfield was sent into Lafayette County to wipe out the traitors, deserters, etc. He killed any able-bodied man who could not prove immediately that he was on furlough from the CSA, etc. He burned out the homes and buildings, destroyed anything usable, and sent the women to Tallahassee to Camp Six. My 2gtgrandmother survived on some salt pork that had been buried beneath the house. After Campfield left, the Unionists burned out the CSA supporters. Lots of fun for a section that had no Civil War battles, etc., wouldn't you say!? The 2nd Fl. Cavalry, US, was a legitimate part of the Yankee army. Imagine my dismay when I learned this! I'm a dyed in the wool Southerner and this totally amazed me. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the additional info I've found and am equally proud of all sides of my heritage.
