Re: Sharpshooters

Jphn Hugh Jessup, a Private in Company C, 4th Georgia says in an August 14, 1935 interview that "At Gettysburg I was appointed a sharpshooter ... sharpshooters marched in front and to the sides of the [regimental] line to keep a watch-out for the enemy. They had to be clear sighted and quick on the trigger." (source: Confederate Reminiscences, by Mary Gallaway Jones, Robert L. Brake Collection, MHI, Carlisle, PA)

By April 25, 1863, brigade commander BGEN Wofford formed the 3rd Georgia Battalion from 50 men, 2 Lts. and 1 Capt. taken from each of his five regiments (and legions), and a sixth composed of volunteers from all five regiments. It drilled in a separate camp, and apparently went into battle at Gettysburg as sharpshooters/skirmishers in front of the brigade. However, it is difficult to find separate records for the 3rd GA BN and its members are typically included in the casualty lists of their original regiments. Two good sources for this Battalion are: 1) The Confederacy Is On Her Way Up The Spout (letters of Milton Barrett), and 2) Georgia Sharpshooter, The Civil War Diary and Letters of William Rhadamanthus Montgomery. General Lee approved the formation of this Battalion on May 25, 1863.
