Thanks Tom--there are several other references to the sharpshooters in that time period--the James E. Green diary, which is located in NC Archives, has many references to the formation of the sharpshooter battalion in Daniel's Brigade. Green like Leon was in the 53rd North Carolina. His diary may also possibly be at Carlisle Barracks in the Brake Collection. William H. Brotherton, who was in the 23rd North Carolina in Iverson's Brigade, also makes some references to joining the sharpshooters. His letters are at the Perkins Library at Duke.
