Can someone tell me if there is one place I can write or call to find out who ordered a tombstone for an Alabama soldier who died in 1862 and when it was ordered?

I have no recollection of having seen the tombstone in the early 70s. Don't believe it was there in 1984 either when a book was written about the family and no mention was made of military service for this person. So, I'm thinking the tombstone would have been ordered and placed since that time.
