Re: Who was the only county not to join the confed

It would be interesting to know the names of these men. Compared to other Alabama counties, there just weren't many men available in Winston County to join either side. Figures from a source I can't recall stated that just over 300 enlisted in Federal companies, and about 100 enrolled in Confederate companies.

Winston County men can sometimes be found in companies recruited along its boundaries. These were Lawrence, Morgan, Blount, Walker, Marion and Franklin. For instance, a man from Winston County served as an officer in Co. "H", 35th Alabama Infantry Regiment, which was recruited in Lawrence County.

Another point: some of the counties surrounding Winston County may have contributed as many or more men to Union military service than Winston. They don't receive the same attention because total Union enlistments in counties mentioned above was much smaller than the number of men who joined Confederate units. Marion County has a monument on which the names of men who joined either side are inscribed. I'm told it lists quite a number of names.

Winston is unique in Alabama only because the proportion of men from that county serving in Union military units was larger than the number who joined Confederate commands. The total was quite small compared to other counties. Example: perhaps 450 men from Winston County joined both sides, compared to Macon County, in which an estimated 2,700 residents enlisted in Confederate service.
