Re: Gettysburg - Alabama's Battle

Jim,
You are correct about Alabama, so long as No. 4 on your list is left off since O'Neal's brigade did not arrive in the vicinity of Culp's Hill until the early morning hours of July 3. However, you cannot count artillery batteries in your calculation as Virginia could then make the same claim.

Dave, here is the information from Hardaway's (Capt William B. Hurt) battery markers (two positions):

(Oak Hill:) July 1-The two Whitworths in position to the right of the Chambersburg Pike near the position of Pegram's Battalion. Opened fire slowly and effectively shelling the woods occupied by Union troops to the right of the town. July 2-The battery in position south of the Hagerstown Road, exposed to a heavy fire from the Union sharpshooters and artillery. July 3-The Whitworth guns were moved to this position and fired with great effect, the 3-inch Rifles remaining on Seminary Ridge south of the Hagerstown Road. July 4-Withdrew in evening to Marsh Creek on the Fairfield road. Losses not reported in detail.

(Seminary Ridge:) July 1-The Whitworths in position near Chambersburg Pike west of Herr's Tavern and actively engaged. The Rifles occupied hill near Fairfield road, not engaged. July 2-All guns in position here and actively engaged under heavy fire of infantry and artillery. July 3-The 3-inch Rifles remain here. Whitworths sent to Oak Hill. All actively engaged. July 4-Withdrew in evening to Marsh Creek on the Fairfield road.

Busey and Martin states that Hurt's battery had 71 present at Gettysburg, and eight were wounded. Four of these were left behind and taken prisoner.
