I think you are right about Union attitudes during the battle, If Lee misjudged anything it was the willingness of the Union troops to slug it out to the end. Maybe because it was on their home soil or, their impressions of the serious consequences of this battle- or maybe the Army of the Potomac had finally developed into a strong army. The attitude of the troops at any point in a battle can be the difference between victory and defeat. It's interesting to think whether Lee might have planned his campaign differently had he understood the new resolve of the Union army.
