Quinn,
I have some difficulty accepting that the 12th Alabama was the regiment that came up behind Iverson's 20th North Carolina. Captain Hicks was captured as they came up, so perhaps he assumed the regiment was the 12th Alabama from post-war information. Unfortunately the movements of Col. O'neal's brigade are not fully understood. However, the 3rd Alabama regiment is a much better candidate for the unit that Captain Hicks observed, it having been separated from the rest of the brigade and conforming its movements to the left of BGen. Daniel's brigade. Another possibility is the 12th North Carolina, which was partly shielded by favorable ground on the right and suffered much less than the rest of BGen. Iverson's brigade. I'm sure that some folks who have done a lot of research on this part of the first day's fight at Gettysburg could add more to the discussion.
