Colonel Cullen Battle's Third Alabama made a significant contribution in the fighting on July 1. Acting largely on his own,Battle brought the regiment into the crucial attack at just the right time and place. Battle's promotion followed, and he commanded Battle's Brigade(3rd,5th,6th,12th,26th, and later 61st Alabama) until he was badly wounded at Cedar Creek (October 19, 1864).
