The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: 16th Alabama Infantry Regiment Co. D

Alan, thanks. I had already forgotten your previous post about the book. I have found that excerpt on various sites on the net and it's helpful. Still no luck finding the other writings mentioned by George. Maybe other families with ancestors in the 16th, 1st or 45th regiments will see this thread and add some information. Late Tuesday afternoon I took a trip to the stone wall at Peach Orchard Hill where the 16th and other units held their ground on the final day of the Battle of Nashville, but then had to fall back as the entire left flank of the Confederate line collapsed at Shy's Hill. That retreat effectively ended the Civil War. I am on the board of The Battle of Nashville Preservation Society and we have been able to salvage some key parts of the battlefield over the years, despite the urbanization of South Nashville. Come see them when you can, and visit us on our website (currently under revision) at www.bonps.org. Tom
