I recently found two pictures in separate places and both fellows have what looks to be stars on their cuff/sleeve. I have not seen these before and I was wondering if anyone knows what they mean?

The first picture had the caption of Hilliard's Legion Alabama Cav. 5th Battalion.

The second picture only said Jeremiah 43rd Ala Inf. Reg.
