The cavalry company mentioned almost immediately joined Col Adams with a number of other mounted companies from Alabama. Most of them later formed the 3rd Alabama Cavalry. Cleveland's troop from Clarke County AL remained as Company "I".
This company organized in late September 1861 and served with the Army of the Mississippi until the summer of 1862. The "David Clopton Rangers" didn't organize until Mar 10, 1862, served in Montgomery while Hilliard's Legion organized. THe 5th Battalion then went with the Legion to East Tennessee via Atlanta and Chattanooga.
How did men from different companies formed at different times and serving in different areas manage to have the same uniform? I'm tempted to suppose that both went to the same photographer who gave them a uniform jacket and a sword for the sitting. If so there should be other examples of soldiers who are attired similarly.
