Early war militia type frock coats worn by some Alabama companies. Probably pre Alabama Volunteer Corps regulations. I think they are just decorative cuff trim - not an insignia of rank. There is another picture with the same coat on p.38 in Brassey's History of Uniforms, American Civil War Army by Ron Field 1996. This photograph is attributed to the Clark County Rangers, Co. D, 2nd Alabama Infantry.
