The gentleman in the image served under Capt Peter M. Rowland in a company from Chambers County, AL called the "David Clopton Rangers". Members mustered at Hickory Flat, AL, Mar. 10, 1862. Officers and men later formed Co. "A", 5th Battalion, Hilliard's Alabama Legion.

The Confederate Adjutant and Inspector General created the 10th Confederate Cavalry on Dec. 27, 1862, by joining five companies of this cavalry battalion and five companies from Goode's 19th Georgia Partisan Ranger Battalion.
