A soldier could be dropped from the rolls for any number of conditions, i.e., death, desertion, discharge, transfer, capture, etc. Unless, it was specified, we can only assume it was less than dishonorable. In our case here, as Alan notes, his services were most likely no longer required. Reviewing his companies record of events, life a time must have been quite boring with only daily drills occurring.

A vast majority of soldiers records are incomplete with it being obvious that they must have been dropped from the rolls at some later date. However, with no subsequent company muster rolls available, we can never know the reason for their absence. In these cases, without a qualification, we must assume honorable service.

Company E, Record of Events for the period April 30 to June 30, 1864 where they were stationed at the end of the period at Battery McIntosh, Mobile Bay

"The company has no military history since last muster. We have two drills in heavy Artillery and one in Infantry daily."
