Book mention of 1st Alabama Cavalry

Several years ago, I read a book that said members of the 1st Alabama (Union) Cavalry had scars on their faces from being hunted down by packs of dogs. This had happened
due to their loyalty to the union before the formation of the Cavalry regiment.

I can't recall the name of the book and can't find it in any of the libraries I used around that time. I believe it related to Sherman's march to the sea, but am not sure.

Does anyone recall reading about this?
