Normally the men sent after deserters would have been militia (home guards). The militia had been used before the war for nightly slave patrols. During the war the militia changed focus to deserters and conscripts seeking to avoid enlistment.

By mid-1863 as many as twenty mounted companies in Confederate service had been raised by the Conscript Bureau in Alabama. These supplemented the militia and brought many men out of the woods and into the army.
