The book was from one of three or four libraries I regularly used a few years ago in NW Georgia and Chattanooga, Tenn.

The gist of the passage was a description of members of Sherman's escort - 1st. Ala. Cavalry and that some of them had scars from being hunted down with dogs. I don't recall for sure if it specified the type of canine used.

I would not be surprised if this actually occurred, given some of the methods used in the Jones County, Miss. area and other places to hunt down deserters or draft shirkers. Southern patrols regularly used dogs to take down escaped slaves and it is logical that dogs could have been used to find whites who were hiding out from conscription patrols, etc., especially after desertions became a major problem for the Southern armies.
