Whoever filled out the blanks on the document wrote his rank as corporal on the first line. However, when he signed the same document, he signed as Capt. Further proof that he received a commission before Vicksburg is found on a pay voucher dated 8 Jan'63, and covering the month of October '62, showing that he was paid $90 as a 1st Lt. Later, in a letter he wrote to Capt. Wm. Elliott, A.A.G. "In trenches 30th Ala Vol Jun 13/63", he signs as "Capt Co 'G' 30th Ala."
