Re: Capt. Durrette (Randolph Co.) 30th AL Infantr

On reviewing his record again, I discovered some discrepancies from the information provided earlier. First, the jacket states his rank in as private, but his rank out as corporal. However, above the word corporal (in pencil or lighter ink), someone has written "Capt." Part of the confusion may stem from the parole document he signed after the surrender at Vicksburg. Whoever filled out the blanks on the document wrote his rank as corporal on the first line. However, when he signed the same document, he signed as Capt. Further proof that he received a commission before Vicksburg is found on a pay voucher dated 8 Jan'63, and covering the month of October '62, showing that he was paid $90 as a 1st Lt. Later, in a letter he wrote to Capt. Wm. Elliott, A.A.G. "In trenches 30th Ala Vol Jun 13/63", he signs as "Capt Co 'G' 30th Ala."
