I should add that many returning exchanged prisoners of war got snared at Vicksburg when the city surrendered on July 4, 1863. These men were in transit back to Arkansas, after being exchanged at City Point, Virginia. Their names (and regimental affiliation) appear on the list of men captured and paroled, leading to some erroneous conclusions that those regiments were involved in the Vicksburg Campaign.

For example, several members of the 27th Arkansas Regiment were paroled at Vicksburg. These were men who had been detailed to guard a nitre mine in northern Arkansas, were captured, exchanged, and got hung up at Vicksburg trying to get back to Arkansas. Not surprisingly, some people will argue till the cows come home that, since some 27th Arkansas boys were captured at Vicksburg, the 27th Arkansas was involved the Vicksburg Campaign. A little research would clear things up for them.
