Re: Home Guards: a clarification

Doug, the "Army of Arkansas," which was established by the Secession Convention, was what was commonly referred to as the "Arkansas State Troops." I guess it could be considered our equivalent to the Missouri State Guard.

The Arkansas State Troops would make another interesting discussion thread. It was composed of volunteer companies organized into regiments, further organized into two divisions (in northwest and northeast Arkansas), all under the command of the Governor, but subject to the supervision of the State Military Board.

Although many, if not most, of the State Troops were also members of the State Militia, there was no traditional, legal or operational connection between the two. It was a whole new organization.

In July 1861, the State Troops in northeast Arkansas were transferred to Confederate service and redesignated as Arkansas volunteer regiments. The State Troops in northwest Arkansas were disbanded after the Battle of Wilson's Creek. Brig. Gen. Pearce's action in the dissolution of his regiments is still a controversial and debatable point.
