Re: Home Guards: a clarification

Doug, to confuse things even further (hey, this is Arkansas, right?) there were both Arkansas State Troops and Arkansas Confederate troops at Wilson's Creek.

Brig. Gen. Pearce's "brigade" was the 1st Division, Army of Arkansas, and consisted of these troops, mustered into State service for three months:
1st Regiment Cavalry -- Col. DeRosey Carroll.
3rd Regiment Infantry -- Col. John R. Gratiot.
4th Regiment Infantry -- Col. James D. Walker.
5th Regiment Infantry -- Col. Thomas P. Dockery.
Fort Smith Artillery -- Capt. John G. Reid.
Pulaski Light Artillery -- Capt. William E. Woodruff, Jr.

Brig. Gen. McCulloch's brigade consisted of these volunteer regiments, mustered into Confederate service for twelve months:
1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles -- Col. Thomas J. Churchill.
2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles -- Col. James McQ. McIntosh.
3rd Arkansas Battalion Infantry -- Lieut. Col. Dandridge McRae.
3rd Louisiana Regiment Infantry -- Col. Louis Hebert.
South Kansas-Texas Regiment Mounted Volunteers -- Col. Elkanah B. Greer.

And, of course, Maj. Gen. Sterling Price's command consisted of elements of five divisions of the Missouri State Guard.

At Pea Ridge, the Arkansas troops were all enrolled in Confederate service. The Arkansas State Troops had ceased to exist by the end of August 1861.

Men who had previously served in State or Confederate service for anything less than "three years or the war" were still subject to the Conscript Act, unless otherwise disqualified for service by age, disability or exemption. Most of them, indeed, later enlisted or were conscripted (or joined the Union army).
