Pearce's Regimental Designations

Doug, in true Arkansas tradition, the regiments I cited above require some explanation.

As I stated in a discussion of the Arkansas Secession Convention, the State Military Board was established to oversee the raising of troops and to authorize the organization of new regiments. The board assigned a sequential numerical designation for each newly-authorized regiment. As the Arkansas State Troops arrived in northwest Arkansas, the division commander, Brig. Gen. Nathaniel B. Pearce, took it upon himself to assign his own regimental designations, apparently based on the order in which each regiment arrived at his headquarters. Therefore, there are contradictions in the regimental designations, depending on whether you are reading reports from northwest Arkansas, or reports from Little Rock.

Here is a matrix which shows Pearce's designations, with the official State Military Board designations in (parentheses) --

1st Regiment Cavalry (3rd Regiment State Troops) -- Col. DeRosey Carroll.
3rd Regiment Infantry (2nd Regiment State Troops) -- Col. John R. Gratiot.
4th Regiment Infantry (4th Regiment State Troops) -- Col. James D. Walker.
5th Regiment Infantry (5th Regiment State Troops) -- Col. Thomas P. Dockery.

When I answer queries from other researchers, I generally use Pearce's designations, since those are the ones which are used in reports of the Battle of Wilson's Creek, and are the ones people are most familiar with, and put the State Military Board designation in parentheses, preceded by "aka".

Ah, the joys of researching Arkansas regiments.
