Re: 12th battalion of sharpshooters Irish?

I'd certainly agree. If we're talking about the same source, I've noticed an Alabama company or two on the list that seemed surprising. Unless the author can cite reliable sources or has a good explanation as to how he arrived at these conclusions, let the buyer beware.

What if my last name is O'Brien, but only one of my eight family lines has any Irish blood? That may be good enough for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, but does that really make me Irish?
[Except on Saint Patrick's Day, of course!]

If the soldier in question was born in Ireland, or if both his parents were Irish natives, then he might fairly be called Irish. You just can't glance over names on an on-line roll and decide that a company must be Irish.

Honestly, I've been guilty of doing things like that myself. Hopefully, nobody ever printed anything based on one of my off-the-cuff opinions.

Bryan may recall a Sam Peckinpah titled "Major Dundee". It's a post-Civil War western featuring a group of Confederates who never surrendered. Richard Harris plays their Irish-born leader, Capt. Benjamin Tyree.

Some of the dialog about Capt. Tyree was obviously written to counter the fanciful image of Irish plantation owners like Gerald O'Hara of Tara in "Gone With the Wind". I'm not so sure that some of the GWTW imagery isn't at work with the identification of so many Confederate units as Irish.

"Irish? I think he looks Australian!"
