Sharon,
The 14th Arkansas Infantry was in Colonel Louis Hebert's Infantry Brigade of Benjamin McCulloch's Division. It was involved in Hebert's flanking attack on the first day (March 7) at the Leetown phase of the battle, which was where the heavy fighting was done on this part of the battlefield. Since Hebert was attacking through heavy woods, his 4 regiments (3rd LA, 4th AR, 14th AR, 15th AR)got tangled together and attacked as a mass rather than as individual regiments. Men simply found an officer or NCO and followed them. Needless to say, the attack failed.

Only 2 of the regiments of Pike's Indian Brigade were able to make it to the field in time to take part in the fight. Drew's 1st Cherokee and Watie's 2nd Cherokee. The 1st Creek and the 1st Chocktaw & Chickasaw were held up in the Indian Territory. (Since Van Dorn was violating the treaty with the tribes by ordering them out of the Indian Territory, the regiments had to be paid prior to joining Van Dorn. This delayed them joining him.)

As for the dead, most of the Federals were buried near the hospitals or on the battlefield. The Confederates were hastily buried in trenches on the field. Due to the rocky ground, "buried" is a relative term. Usually, a shallow ditch was scraped out and the bodies were covered as best as could be done. Later, the Federals were disinterred and reburied at the National Cemetery at Fayetteville and Springfield, MO. Some were also buried at Cassville, MO. The Confederate dead were disinterred and reburied at the Confederate Cemetery in Fayetteville. The Confederate Cemetery is located on what used to be some of the best ground in Fayetteville. It's now forgotten by nearly everyone except those who maintain it (and they do a great job). Anyone making a trip to Pea Ridge should visit it.
