Jimmie,

I'm a native Oklahoman, member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and descend from over twenty grandfathers and uncles who were members of the 1st and 2nd Cherokee Mounted Volunteers. Unfortunately, you will never be able to determine which, if any members, of Stand Watie's men fought in the battle. Stand Watie, himself, was not at the battle. It is mentioned in some accounts that a contingent of Cherokees and mixed-bloods, perhaps as many as 200, under the command of a Joel Mayes Bryan, later the commander of Bryan's Battalion, DID participate in the battle and there is even a Little Rock newspaper account that attributes the death of the Union commander, Nathaniel Lyon to Cherokees. There is no confirmation of this story and many believe its purpose was to portray the Indians as active and important participants in the battle for propaganda purposes.

As Alan Pitts stated in his response your ancestor appears to have a Compiled Military Service Record in the National Archives. Unfortunately, you will find, should you choose to order William Russell's Service Record file, that many of the Indian Territory Confederate soldier's records are quite sparse, generally amounting to no more than 3-4 cards/pages. You never know though, perhaps you'll get lucky with his service file and discover a "nugget" of information that tells you a great deal about him or your family genealogy.

As Alan stated you can order these records through the message boards.

Good luck with your search.

Jim Martin
