I'm not familiar with cotton yields, but it seems like my ancestor was impressed by what he saw along the Mississippi. So I'm guessing the amount of cotton being produced on his own plantation near Huntsville, AL was somewhat less than a bale to the acre. He was planning a side trip to Texas to check out the country on this same trip, so it seems he was interested in moving elsewhere to find better land. Ultimately the family decided on Arkansas.
