That's certainly a possibility. It's just that I haven't seen any definitive evidence from the very limited source material. The account by Dr. J.M. Brown distinctly mentions the other three regiments while making no mention of Cocke's regiment.

I believe what brought the original post up (related to the link) was my noticing that Col. Hawthorn had been dismissed from his regiment in an election between him at Lt. Col. Cocke in January, 1864. I had previously thought Cocke had assumed command of the regiment when Hawthorn was promoted to brigadier general. I wonder if this is the only case where a colonel was voted out by his regiment, only to be promoted to brigadier general, and return as the commander of the brigade to which his former regiment was attached. I could see that being a very awkward situation that may have resulted in Cocke's regiment being transferred to another brigade.

I'm still waiting to find some evidence that leaves no doubt as to where Cocke's regiment was during the battle- whether with Hawthorn's brigade or somewhere else.
