Yes, My GGrandfather was with Company "I" 3rd Arkansas Inf. at Devils Den on that fateful July 2nd 1863 date. But he didn't get there because he had any special demonstrated abilities with his musket. He was just an old country boy/farmer who volunteered because of his convictions in 1861.

Again I have found no mention of any "Marksmanship Qualification" that were require for acceptance into any Specialist Sharpshooters unit outside of the famed qualifications of the 1st and 2nd United States Sharpshooters otherwise known as Berdan's Sharpshooters.

The south did however, have marksman who were armed with with 30 pound target rifles and the fame Whitworth rifles that were used as "snipers". Longstreet for example, had about 20 or so of them under his command in his corp. Now those old boys did get their positions because of their shooting abilities and I am not sure how they demonstarted their abilities to get their jobs. They may have simple have owned their own weapons.

But they were not a normal part of an organized regiment such as the 12th Arkansas Battalion. They operated independently acting almost as light mobile artillery against selected high value targets, generally against Union high ranking officers and artillery crews, mainly under the direction of Longstreet's staff.
