You are exactly right, Bryan. There was at least one unit in the Confederate Army that held a match to determine the best marksmen in the Brigade. The First Kentucky Inf. Bde. had an elite corps of sharpshooters, 10 men I believe, 2 from each regt., that did act as "snipers" in the Atlanta Campaign. They were armed with British made Kerr Rifles that were sometimes fired at targets up to 1,000 yds. The Kerr Rifle was different than the .577-caliber Enfield, used by most CW Inf. The Kerr had a .45 Cal. bore, with special 6-groove ratchet rifling. It had a high trajectory and was important to know the range from gun to target. A hand held stadium was used to estimate range.
