Interesting discussion on the useage and equipage of snipers/sharpshooters in the war. I thought I would add my 1/2 cents worth, from the very limited amount I have read on the subject. In Craig Symonds'; Stonewall of the West: Patrick Cleburne and the Civil War there is some reference to his training and use of sharpshooters. In this work it is related that his men were armed with the regular infantry rifle for the march, but had heavy barreled target rifles carried in the bagage wagons for their long range work. It also states that for training the men chosen for this work would estimate the distance to an object on the march, and then they would pace the distance off to help improve their estimates.
