I think you are on to something here. If we look at the OOB each of the 3 brigades is made up of 3 regiments. In Bearr's book he lists just 3 regiments for Hawthorne's brigade. While Cocke is listed as killed in the battle, there is no mention by anyone of Cocke's regiment. It is quite possible they could have been attached out to some other unit but it would seem some of the reports would mention that. PErhaps they were broken up and distributed in the 3 regiments. Hawthorne's regt lost quite a few captured at Helena on Battery D hill not to mention his loss in killed and wounded. The regiment was evidently filled by men who pretty much joined to keep from being conscripted. There are quite a few desertions from it as well. The size and number of men may have caused it to be so understrength and/or so unreliable that it was guarding wagons, the rear etc. Cocke could have been up front with other troops of the brigade as well, assisting Hawthorne. THese are just speculations on my part. I was mistaken on my D Company man, he commanded his company on the abscence of its captain. Hope someone can come up with something on this regiment and its part in the battle. My g g grandfather was in it and was a waggoner as late as Feb 64.
