I did run across mention of Hawthorne's brigade which may shed some clues. When Tappan's brigade entered combat, Shaver's consl regt was posted to the far right with Hardy's regt between his and Grinstead's. When Tappan called for help Hawthorn'e regt arrived and was to attack to the left of Tappan's brigade. THis would put them in Cooper's field. While this occurred, according to Silas Turnbo of the 27th ARk of Shaver's regiment which was all the way on the Conf right, he mentions men of Hawthorne's brigade and Shaver's fighting together and advancing together in the woods. Tappan reported that he formed his troops on Hawthorne's right as Hawthorne's entered the field. So here is the question...who were those men of Hawthorne's brigade who fought with Shaver's regiment on the far right???? Perhaps the men of Cocke's regiment?? Seems strange that if the 3 regiments of Hawthorne were in the field and to the left of Tappan's brigade, then someone must hvae been sent to the far right to assist Shaver who was having some success at times in the woods.
