I find it interesting that the strongest Union sentiment seemed to be concentrated in the mountainous regions of many Southern states -- Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, (West) Virginia, etc. It is understandable that the lowlands of these states would be anti-Republican in sentiment, since that's where the large slaveholders were concentrated; but I wonder what factors resulted in Unionist sentiment in the uplands?
