The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: John T. Falls, m/w Mine Creek, KS 1864.

I've been trying to study Slemons and the 2d Arkansas Cavalry, during 1863 & 1864. The regiment (apparently) was decimated by men taking "unofficial leave" and crossing back into Arkansas, to the extent that when the Federal cavalry pinched Grenada from both north & south there were less than 100 men (I believe around 50) in the regiment and the town was abandoned (tho not just for that reason, obviously). During the autumn of '63 officers were sent into Arkansas to round up those on "leave" and bring them back to Mississippi. In the spring of '64 the regiment was fighting with N.B. Forrest, then is abruptly transferred back to Arkansas. Perhaps Slemons was with them, perhaps he was already back in Arkansas, but his name does not appear in the O.R.s in Arkansas until June.

I'd love to know what Slemons, the 2d Arkansas Cavalry etc. was up to between February-March 1864 and September '64 when they set out under Sterling Price. Any help appreciated.
