The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: John T. Falls, m/w Mine Creek, KS 1864.

John, I don't have much information about the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry after the end of 1862, though not for lack of trying.

There's a letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Withers, dated at Headquarters 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, Panola, Mississippi, July 28, 1863, in which he states: The regt of which I am an officer having been in service over two years and never having been allowed to recruit has been so reduced by the casualties of war that we now report only about four hundred effective men. For the command of these we have twenty-three (23) officers including the Col.

There's also an application for transfer from Pvt. Columbus H. Allen of Company C, dated at McCulloch's Cavalry Brigade, Panola County, Mississippi, February 11, 1864.

Sometime after that date, the regiment was transferred to Arkansas. I recall reading somewhere that the Governor specifically asked for Slemons' regiment to be transferred back to Arkansas, and made reference to the regiment's excellent reputation.

A bit of trivia -- the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry was the only Arkansas unit which returned to the State under orders. Other units returned to Arkansas, but as prisoners awaiting exchange.
