The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Attn: BRYAN or DOYLE - Looking for Willian J H

Jim, there was no prisoner of war camp at Fayetteville, Arkansas. When Confederate soldiers were captured in the western part of the Trans-Mississippi Department, the normal procedure was to transport them to Springfield, Missouri, where they were "examined" (interrogated), after which they were forwarded to Gratiot Street Military Prison at St. Louis. Some were kept at Gratiot Street, but most were sent on to prisoner of war camps in Illinois and Indiana, except for officers, who were sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio.

The U.S. Army maintained a military hospital at Fayetteville where a few wounded Confederate POWs reportedly died.

Union POWs who were captured in the Trans-Mississippi Department were normally sent to Camp Ford, near Tyler, Texas.
